Celebrating Strong Achievement at GCSE

St Joseph’s College is today celebrating another year of strong achievement at GCSE with 88% of students achieving Grade 4 and above in English and 77% Grade 4 and above in Mathematics.

These results follow on from commendable A-level and record-breaking BTEC results last week – together with an outstanding ISI inspection in March, in which the school was rated ‘excellent’ across all areas.

St Joseph’s College Vice Principal Academic, Mr Cinnamond, said, ’Whilst we celebrate academic attainment and are delighted with the number of students earning top results, we are equally delighted with our students’ value-added achievements: one child’s Grade 4 or Grade 5 can be their Everest, which then opens the door to further opportunities and success.

‘We look forward now to supporting our students on the next part of their journey, starting their BTEC, EPQ and A-level courses from September in our fabulous Sixth Form Centre.’

Of the 67 students sitting GCSEs, 73% achieved Grade 4 and above in both English and Maths.

Principal, Mrs Clarke, added: ‘Today’s results are a testament to the hard work of both our students and staff. Talent, tenacity and terrific character abound at St Joseph’s and this was very much recognised in our recent inspection. Of course, different years bring different joys, including this year’s 57% of grades at Grade 9 in Art. Among the individual success stories we are celebrating today, there are those of Imogen Milner-Moore and Hayden Rolph, both of whom epitomise St Joseph’s College ideals.’

Imogen, a talented showjumper, fractured her back and wrist whist trying out a horse over a jump in the run up to the the exams and returned to school in a rigid back brace. Rather than “sitting” her GCSEs, Imogen worked at a standing desk and had recourse to a bed set up in the school’s squash court when she needed to rest.

Triumphing over adversity, she achieved nine great GCSE passes – including Grade 8s in English Language, English Literature and Business and an A in IGCSE Geography.

She said, ‘I’m not back riding yet but yesterday I was signed off by the doctors, so today I’m celebrating two bits of good news!’

Hayden Rolph demonstrated the skills that have earned him a STEM scholarship for St Joseph’s College Sixth Form, with 10 excellent GCSEs, including Grade 9s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics, plus A*s in Further Maths and Geography.

The Independent Schools Inspection team visited St Joseph’s in March and deemed the College to be ‘Excellent’ for both the quality of pupils’ academic achievement and their personal development.

The future is bright for students at St Joseph’s.
