National Champions: St Joseph’s College Debaters Beat 375 Schools to Claim Historic Victory

St Joseph’s College has been crowned national debating champions, after an outstanding performance in one of the UK’s most prestigious competitions.

Students Ademide, Alex, Josh and reserve speaker Ben triumphed over more than 375 schools nationwide to win the grand final of the English-Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace Debating Competition on Thursday 7 May. Founded in 1957, the competition reached its climax at Dartmouth House in Mayfair, placing St Joseph’s among an elite group of winners.

Dr Rice, Head of Humanities, described the achievement as a defining moment:

“To emerge as champions is a truly remarkable accomplishment and firmly establishes our senior debate team among the finest in the country. This is an extraordinary achievement and a proud moment in our school’s history.”

The final, held in the historic Churchill Room beneath the portrait of Winston Churchill, provided a fitting stage for the students’ success.

“Watching the boys perform with such confidence and intelligence was a moment I will never forget,” added Dr Rice.

The motion debated ‘This House would ban athletes from competing under a neutral flag at the Olympic Games if their country is subject to international sanctions’ required sophisticated argument, critical thinking and composure under pressure. The St Joseph’s team delivered with poise, confidence and intellectual rigour, demonstrating the skills that define exceptional young leaders.

The Schools’ Mace has a distinguished legacy, with past participants including broadcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy and BBC presenter Edward Stourton, placing this year’s winners in impressive company.

Deputy Principal Sacha Cinnamond highlighted the broader significance of the win:

“Debating has become part of the identity of St Joseph’s College. That culture has been built through years of hard work from students who have embraced challenge, curiosity and ambition.”

Behind the scenes, Dr Rice has played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s success remarkably doing so while on maternity leave. Reflecting on the journey, she said:

“This was genuinely one of the most memorable moments of my teaching career. To watch the evolution of this team over several years, and to see countless hours of preparation and commitment rewarded on the national stage, was simply sublime. I could not be prouder of our students.”

Adding to an already exceptional year, Dr Rice has also been shortlisted for the Historic Royal Palaces Inspiring Teacher Awards 2026, further recognising her impact.

The victory has resonated strongly with the school community. Parent Ian Blaydon said:

“Hearing that St Joseph’s College had won will forever make me proud of my son Alex and grateful to the school for creating the environment that made this possible. This level of success is built on long-term vision, hard work, and a culture that promotes independent thinking, teamwork and ambition.”

This landmark win not only celebrates the success of four remarkable students, but also reflects the strength of teaching, the culture of aspiration, and the commitment to excellence at St Joseph’s College.

With this national title secured, St Joseph’s continues to build a reputation as a school where confident, articulate and thoughtful young people thrive and where future leaders are made.
