“The opposite of play is not work, it’s depression.”Dr. Stuart Brown, Stanford University
Our commitment to sport of all kinds is a hallmark of life at St Joseph’s College. As a centre for competitive sports we have a national reputation, enhanced by our recent multi-million pound investment in new artificial turf hockey pitches, tennis and netball courts, and new changing facilities. Alongside our major sports there are opportunities for pupils of all abilities to participate in a diverse range of activities. These include trampoline, badminton, golf, swimming, squash, table tennis, athletics and gymnastics.
A significant number of boys and girls represent the county in sports including rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming and tennis. Some of these pupils go on to achieve national recognition in their chosen sports, with boys’ rugby being a particular strength. Our coaching staff includes former international players in cricket, rugby, hockey and handball.
Inter-school fixtures give pupils the chance to represent St Joseph’s, whilst international sports tours have in the recent past given our students the chance to visit countries including South Africa, France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Holland. The College also hosts important national rugby and cricket festivals which enable our students to compete against some of the best national and international teams.
