Staff & Governors

Introducing the leadership team at St Joseph's College.

The Senior Leadership Team at St Joseph’s College is comprised of:

Principal - Mrs Danielle Clarke (BA Hons, NPQH) 

Mrs Clarke has worked in both the maintained and independent education sectors, holding a range of senior management and leadership roles. She is a qualified Modern Foreign Languages teacher and has taught French, German, Spanish and Latin.

She was appointed to the position of Vice Principal at St Joseph’s in 2007 and to Principal of the College in January 2014, with responsibility for the day-to-day running of all aspects of the school including safeguarding, academic performance, pastoral care, boarding, finance and health and safety.  Mrs Clarke lives on the school campus with her family.

She is a member of the Society of Heads and of the Independent Schools Council Futures’ Group. As well as sitting on Suffolk’s Safeguarding Children board, she is a trained ISI Team Inspector.

Vice Principal - Dr Martin Hine (BEd Hons, PHD, FRSA, NPQH)

Dr Hine was appointed Head of the Prep School in 2005 and led the Prep School team to its “excellent” ISI rating in March 2013, awarded for excellent pupil attainment; the quality of pupils’ learning and teachers’ teaching; the quality of the curriculum; and its extra-curricular activities. In 2014 he was promoted to the position of Vice Principal of the College.

Dr Hine works closely on the College’s Development Plan, as well as developing the quality of student and staff learning and education. As well as being an advocate of extending community relations, particularly alongside the Parent Teacher Association, he teaches students at the University of Suffolk on the MA in Education course; is a consultant to the primary and secondary strands of the North Essex Teacher Training consortium; and is the school leadership advisor to the Headteacher at the Osiligi Obaya Primary School in Kenya.

Director of Studies - Mr Steve Phaup (BSc Hons)

With over 15 years teaching experience, Mr Phaup has a wide range of roles and responsibilities at St Joseph's. He is responsible for the academic life of the St Joseph’s College Senior School, with oversight of the curriculum, timetabling, assessment, reporting and public examinations.

Mr Phaup has also worked extensively within the boarding environment and, outside of the classroom, he has supported the Duke of Edinburgh Award and led a variety of World Challenge Projects overseas.

Head of Sixth Form & Progression - Mr Sacha Cinnamond (BA Hons, MA)

With more than 20 years in education, Mr Cinnamond joined St Joseph's in 2016 to lead the Sixth Form and the College's Futures & Progression programme, having spent the previous 10 years as the Director of Sixth Form at his previous school where he had also held the post of Head of History and Head of Humanities.

He is a consultant to the Historical Association and has experience in teacher training for Hodder History as well as working as a masterclass presenter for gifted and talented children for the Gabbitas Truman and Thring Foundation. Mr Cinnamond has also managed a number of bi-lateral and multi-school international partnerships.

Head of Prep School - Mrs Vanessa Wood (BA Hons, PGCE) 

Mrs Wood has over 20 years of experience teaching throughout the 3 – 11 age range in both the maintained and independent education sectors. Her specialism is Computing as well as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Appointed as Deputy Head of Prep School in 2013 and promoted to Head of Prep School in 2017, she is responsible for Prep pupils’ academic curriculum, their achievement and their pastoral care.

A member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools, Mrs Wood works as a personal tutor for Initial Teacher Training at the University of Suffolk and as a consultant for EYFS training.

Bursar - Mrs Debbie Baber (AAT, FFA, FFTA, FIPA)

Mrs Baber has been the St Joseph’s College Bursar for over 17 years. She is responsible for all financial aspects of the College including financial strategy, long term forecasts and all other non-academic aspects of the school including Health and Safety, Medical, Tier 4, HR compliance, Estates, IT, Catering, Finance, and Transport. She is also a trained Compliance Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

The governors of St Joseph’s College are its trustees and offer a wide range of expertise to support and guide the school’s leadership team:

Chair - Mr Paul Clement (BSc Hons, MA)

Paul is the Chief Executive of Ipswich Central, Joint Managing Director of Central Management Solutions, and CEO of Call Connection. He has been a governor of the school since December 2005 and Chair of Governors since July 2014. His children have been educated at St Joseph's College.

Vice Chair - Mr Richard Stace (LLB)

A Solicitor by profession, Richard has specialised in employment law for 25 years and has his own specialist employment law firm. Richard has two sons in the Senior School and has been a governor of St Joseph's College since December 2003.
