Artist of the Month: Ben Howlett

When did you first realise that you had a passion and flair for art?

I discovered my passion for photography at the age of 10, initially sparked by observing my Dad capturing images of me at my sporting events. This interest grew into a passion for diverse photographic genres, including nature, portraiture and macro. As I delved deeper into the craft, I recognised the potential of digital editing tools, such as Photoshop. By immersing myself in online videos and honing my skills, I realised the vast possibilities within the realm of visual storytelling. Achieving a Grade 9 in GCSE photography affirmed my dedication to continue to study photography at A-Level. This helped to motivate me to continually refine my techniques and enhance my ability to produce compelling imagery.

 What inspires you?

My inspiration is drawn from various sources, primarily through online research and exploration of platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. Observing the ingenious ideas of fellow creators and analysing their compositions and editing techniques, helps me achieve personal growth. Equally important is my self-critique, constantly challenging myself to elevate my artistic expression and push the boundaries of my capabilities.

How would you describe your work?

I would characterise my work as a fusion of creativity, distinctiveness and aesthetic appeal. Using vibrant hues and contrast, I strive to highlight subjects and evoke a captivating visual experience for the audience.

What ambitions do you have for your art?

My artistic aspirations revolve around continual improvement in the pursuit of excellence. I am driven to refine my work by mastering advanced editing tools and staying up to date with technological advancements. By consistently pushing the boundaries of my capabilities, I aim to produce artwork of the highest standard and leave a lasting impact in the realm of visual storytelling.

What advice would you give younger artists?

One piece of advice I would give to younger artists is to explore all niche aspects of the art world to find what resonates with you best. Finding a topic or creative style that you are enthusiastic about makes the learning journey more interesting and rewarding.
