Boarding

My Story

Hello, I am Zuhair Khan, a Year 10 boarder at St Jo’s.

Coming from an Asian-British background, I came to Jo’s in the summer of 2020 after living in Dubai for over a decade. Despite the unique differences of both places, I have loved my time so far. Boarding is a great place for many reasons. There is a massive family culture around the place and many of the boarders I met not so long ago I classify as my best friends.

As well as this, it gives you a very good opportunity to play sport. For example, I originally came here to play football. Despite this year being heavily affected by covid, I have had the luxury of up to four training sessions a week with school, as well as the access to the school pitches after school where I could train individually. I have also had the opportunity to play outside of school for clubs where I have had extra training as well as the opportunity of making more new friends. For the most part of it, I have had up to six team training sessions a week which has been brilliant for my development as a footballer.

Boarding also gives us access to the gym every night which is very beneficial to the physical side of any sport. Alongside football, I have also got an interest in playing cricket and St Jo’s has given me the opportunity to play a lot of cricket during the Summer term. I have had the opportunity to train three times a week with the school as well as a match at the weekend. During the winter, there is also an opportunity to play cricket with the cricketers training in our indoor facility multiple times a week. I am very grateful for the amount of sport boarding and Jo’s have given me.

Another great thing about boarding is the educational aspect. Every evening after dinner, we are required to start studying at 6:30pm. Being in Year 10 and in my first year of my GCSEs, I am required to do an hour and 45 minutes of study every evening apart from Fridays and Saturdays. This has been very beneficial for me as I have seen progress in my confidence and quality of work in the past year.

I would describe boarding here a great place to further enhance your sport and studies. It is a great environment and we have an incredible housemistress and assistant housemaster who are constantly taking care of us and making sure we get our school work done as well as having a good time. I think boarding at St Josephs is absolutely amazing and I am very glad I made the choice and thoroughly looking forward to the next year.

Thank you,

Zuhair Khan
