Onwards, Upwards and Up Still Further for St Joseph’s College

St Joseph’s College Ipswich is celebrating a ‘Double First’ on A-level/BTEC results day. The 92% A*- C achieved by A-level students is, the College believes, our best ever result and 14% above the national average. The UCAS points equivalent of AAB attained by the cohort as a whole (A-level and BTEC/ combined) sets another record high. These results are a vindication of our inclusive outlook, broad curriculum, and our rigorous and nurturing teaching, which is tailored to the individual child.

St Joseph’s’ 74 candidates (combined Applied Level 3 and A-Level) achieved an average total UCAS score per student of 139 points; 65% achieved at least 1 A*/A grade or equivalent; 45% achieved at least 2 A*/A grade or equivalent; and 26% achieved at least 3 A*/A grades or equivalent.

In vocational qualifications, all CTEC Digital Media students attained the maximum D* grade and three-quarters of those taking the Triple BTEC Sport and Exercise Science course attained the maximum D*D*D*. Two of the three BTEC Engineering students attained the maximum D* grade with the other attaining D and three-quarters of the BTEC Double Business Studies students attained DM or higher.

The strength of the school’s showing in traditional A-levels derived from excellence across the curriculum. Subjects in which students attained at least 50% A*- B included Spanish (100%); Maths (92%); History (83%); Geography, English Language and Textiles (all 80%).

Principal Mrs Danielle Clarke, said: ‘St Joseph’s College is proudly non-selective. Of course, our “average” intake includes its share of academic high flyers but in them all we see limitless possibilities. We help every girl and boy to believe they have what it takes and the evidence is there in front of us this morning. We are so proud of their hard work and wish them every success as their journeys continue.’

Beaming smiles, hugs and sighs of relief at a job well done were the order of the day when students, their families and staff gathered at the Sixth Form Centre as successful results and confirmed destinations were exchanged and celebrated. The young men and women have the rest of the summer – and in some cases a gap year – in which to catch their breath before taking up places at universities across Britain and abroad. A number have chosen Degree Apprenticeships, others will be combining their degree-level studies with professional sports contracts in rugby and football. Former deputy Head Boy Reuben Truter, for example, is bound for Oklahoma on a football scholarship.

Captain of the First XV Fergus Cherrington barely has time to gather his thoughts before reporting to Bath University for pre-season training. With three A grade A-levels, plus an A in his EPQ, Fergus will be studying Politics and International Relations.

Phenomenally hard-working Evie Williams, who came to St Jo’s as an Ipswich Town Academy Scholar, also achieved three A grade A-levels and added a Double Distinction Star in Sport and Exercise Science. Evie will be combining an Economics degree with a Norwich City contract.

Other stand out students included Xanthé Baker-Woods, whose A*AAA predicts great things in Biomedical Sciences at Bristol, an area of study next door to the Biochemistry degree at Bath chosen by Liana Ahmed, retiring Deputy Head Girl. Liana achieved three As and a B.
