Under 11 rugby squads unbeaten run |
|
It seems the England rugby squad could learn a thing of two from the under 11 College rugby team.
The squad has had a fantastic season winning all of their matches including Littlegarth 28-10, Finborough School 65-0, The Abbey 26-20, Ipswich School 55-5 and Orwell Park School 40-0.
Their season has also included local tournaments with over one hundred and fifty young rugby players recently playing in the Old Buckenham Hall Preparatory Schools Under 11 and Under 13 Rugby 7’s Tournament.
This was only the 2nd year the school has held the tournament. 10 schools from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex participated in the tournament and these included Dame JB, Beeston Hall, Orwell Park, The Royal Hospital School, Ipswich Prep School, The Abbey, South Lee, St. Joseph’s College and the hosts Old Buckenham Hall School.
The St. Joseph’s College Under 11 team, won their group match against Beeston Hall, then lost to the hosts Old Buckenham Hall by the narrowest of margins 5-0 and won their final group game against Ipswich, which meant they proceeded to the semi-finals where they won against Holmwood House School from Essex. In the other semi-final Old Buckenham Hall School beat The Abbey.
The final between St. Joseph’s College and Old Buckenham Hall School was a terrific battle between the two sides. However despite Old Buckenham Hall taking an early lead 7-0 the team from St. Joseph’s showed great determination and fitness to score two tries of their own to take a 12-7 lead. St. Joseph’s did not have it all their own way though and it took one final match winning tackle to prevent the hosts from scoring what surely would have been the deciding try. At the final whistle both teams were dead on their feet after a superb display of running rugby.
In the Under 13 competition Ipswich School ran out deserving winners against Holmwood House School from Essex.
It was wonderful to see so many children taking part in competitive sport. The standard of rugby played was very high indeed. The children showed wonderful commitment and tenacity and I it was also good to see the great sportsmanship and teamwork shining through in the way they played their rugby. Congratulations to all the players who took part.
