Terry Waite opens St Joseph’s College Junior School |
Beautiful crisp weather, glorious sunshine and the sweetest of voices welcomed Terry Waite to the opening of St Joseph’s College Nursery, Infant and Junior Department today. The ceremony was one of great joy and celebration with children aged from two to eleven involved.
One of the highlights of the day was during one of Terry’s speeches when he told the audience of parents, governors and pupils how a little three year old girl upon overhearing of Terry’s time as an hostage asked her mother “is it true mummy, was he really an Ostrich for five years???”
Principal of the College, Mrs Sian Grant said, “We are delighted to welcome Mr Waite to our College and consider him an inspiration to us all. We hope our new school will also inspire awe and wonder and encourage enquiring minds.
Head of Primary Education, Dr Martin Hine reiterated Mrs Grant’s comments by saying: "It is every educator's dream to be able to provide a purpose built school for girls and boys with state-of-the-art technology and the latest educational equipment. I am very proud of our students and consider it an honour and a pleasure to teach them.”
Following a service in the Chapel, guests of the College were invited to the cutting of the ribbon to the new school by Mr Waite and a blessing by Brother Sean of the De La Salle Brothers.
Children from year four performed a number of hymns and dance routines whilst parents enjoyed the spring like weather.Terry Waite then hosted a debating afternoon in the Sixth form centre whilst the junior school children enjoyed a celebratory party laid on by parents and staff of the College.
