Students Take To The Skies
Students from St Joseph’s College, Ipswich have just returned from a weekend of taking to the skies for the Heavy Lift and Electric Lift Challenge competition being held at Elvington Aerodrome near York. Run by the BMFA (British Model Flying Association) the challenge was in two parts and this year saw the College taking part in both. Once again they took second place in the Heavy Lift Challenge and were delighted to take seven place in their first attempt of the Electric Left.  The Heavy Lift Challenge is designed to see how much weight can be carried by an aircraft on a Mass to Weight ratio. The greater the ratio the higher the marks. The closer the aircraft carries its load to the predicted load also carries more marks. The Electric Lift challenge is for the aircraft to carry water over a given flight path, land and to be emptied and refilled, re-launched and flown again and so on for ten minutes. The winner being the aircraft that carries the most water over the two ten minute slots.  The pupils produced a report on the manufacture of the planes, together with engineering drawings and gave a presentation to the judges on their aircraft and the finer details of its construction and capabilities including technical data.

The College were delighted that the year 12 Physics group were given the chance to take part again having won the Electric Lift competition in 2005 and been runners up last year.  Continued sponsorship by Signs Express and new support from The Sausage Shop at Trimley and the Online Group helped the students with their project during their weekend in York.
The College had their very own pilot, Christopher Ward, who proved to be a most brilliant asset to the team and was a very real help in the preparation of the aircraft.
