MCC Annual Cricket Fixture Friday 9th May saw the 1st XI play their annual fixture with the MCC. The MCC (Marlyebone Cricket Club) are a select men’s cricket club made up of members who have qualified over many games and are based at the home of cricket, Lords cricket ground.

It is undoubtedly always one of the toughest fixtures on any school fixture card, however, this year St Joseph’s College were looking to beat the MCC for the third year running, after two exciting matches in the past two years.

The MCC batted first as they traditionally do, and after 46 overs of really tight bowling against a very strong batting side, they declared their innings on 185-4. Richard Wilson was the pick of the excellent bowling attack, with 2 wickets.

This declaration left St Joseph’s 48 overs to get the MCC’s total, which was always going to leave all three results a possibility.

Josh Davey and Jack Cardy got the College off to a very solid start before Jack was caught and bowled for 18. dsc_0338_wince.jpgThis brought Graham Ford to the crease and this partnership put on 56 before Graham was out LBW for 17.
Josh continued to bat through the innings, ably supported further by Scott Harvey (16), before being run out on 79 when a century looked a distinct possibility.

The loss of a few quick wickets made for a tense finale, however, a calm Chris Morel hit the second ball of the final over for four runs, to help St Joseph’s to an excellent 3 wicket win.

This victory means that we have now beaten the MCC for three years running, something that is quite unheard of for a schoolboy side.
