The Arts

Senior School - The Arts

Our dedicated and passionate staff inspire our students and develop their artistry in the Creative and Performing Arts disciplines. We aim to infuse a depth of vision, passion for exploration, creative mastery, and the appropriate skills to enable each pupil to reach their full potential.
In September 2013 the College was once again awarded Artsmark Gold - the highest level of recognition for excellence in arts and cultural provisions - from Arts Council England. The impact of Artsmark Gold has heightened awareness amongst our College community, contributing to our staff development and ultimately their impact upon providing the best quality of arts provision they can, to develop our children’s’ creative minds, esteem and well-being. St Joseph’s has also become an Arts Award Centre whereby our staff are qualified Arts Award advisors. St Joseph’s pupils can take part in a variety of awards: Arts Award Discover, Arts Award Explore and Arts Award Bronze and Silver.  In addition, our pupils can also take LAMDA and Music tuition culminating in LAMDA examinations, ABRSM examinations and performances at regional arts festivals.
All students are encouraged to take an active role in the extra-curricular arts activities such as musical productions, drama showcases, dance performances, art and photography competitions, art clubs, music recitals, choir, jazz, choral and chamber music performances. Our annual Arts Festival encourages the whole College, students and staff, to participate in dance workshops, drama productions, photography competitions, musical performances, poetry recitals, pavement art, debating and public speaking.
In the Lower School, pupils gain an understanding of the wider world of the Arts by learning and creatively responding to each Arts discipline separately. This could be sculpting, painting, drawing and print-making in Art & Design, choreographing and performing in Dance, or devising and acting in Drama, or even composing and performing in Music.
Our wide range of GCSE arts subjects on offer to our students provides them with  the opportunity to study more intensively in Art & Design, Fine Art, Photography, Music, Drama and Dance. These subjects provide an excellent platform to take students to the next level and study at A level.
